The screenshot below is taken from a bet365.com
bet slip. 5 selections are made from different types of sports
and different types of bets on a given sport. At the bottom of
the screenshot the following text can be clearly read: "Where
selections appear in red your multiple options are restricted".

So if a player wants to bet on multiple
selections in a combination, the bookmaker does not allow this
to be done automatically. If combinations bet are to be placed,
they will have to be completed manually. This is where our
combination generation tool - the CombiGen - comes in use.

This is how the main section of the CombiGen
looks (see screenshot below). The CombiGen is a MS Excel
file that uses user input cells, formulas and macros to perform
a basic yet important betting task - combination generation.
The top 2 cells (see below) are the number of selections input
cells, the first one being the number of selections per bet(2
in the screenshot below), and the second one being the total
number of selections(5 in the screenshot below). The green font
number is the number of all possible combinations(10 in
this example). For practical reasons there are limits to the
maximum values that the spreadsheet can accept, number of
selections per bet is limited to 9, the total munber of
selections is limited to 10. If the these values were to be
increased, the number of combinations will be too great to be
of any practical value. The value in green bold font (total
combinations)is set to disappear if the user selects by mistake
a total selections value that is lower from the selections per
bet value. So if in the example below we had 6 instead of 2 in
the top cell, and the 5 in the lower cell, then this would be
impossible combination and the spreadsheet will show this to
the user by hiding the green number.bet

A white cell with a green arrow on the right
will indicate to the user that an input is required (via the
keyboard). Please scroll down this page to read

Once the user enters his selections'
name/description (what is entered is totally up to the user,
could be any combination of text or numbers), then all that is
needed is a for the green button "Combinations" to be clicked,
this will fire a macro that will perform the required
operations and the end result will look exactly like in the
screenshot below. 5 selections in total, 2 selections per
bet, 10 possible combinations.bet

There is a second button, named "Clear", its
functions is to delete everything that is entered into any of
the white cells, so that another set of data can be entered and
different combinations will be generated.bet combinations

Here is a screenshot of the BetGen, only this
time the number of selections per bet is increased to 4, using
the same data from the white cells as above. This time there
are 5 possible combinations, 4 selections per single
bet.bet

Below the "Combinations" and the "Clear"
buttons there are 2 more cells with spinner buttons, see the
screenshot below. This section of the CombiGen is a separate
one and serves a purely informative purpose - it does not
generate any combinations, but only shows the number of all
possible combinations according to the values selected in the 2
grey cells (the spinner buttons are used to select the values,
or values can be entered via the keyboard as well). No limits
are set to the values, so any possible number can be looked up.
Thus for 20 total selections, 4 selections per bet, there are
4845 possible combinations, as in the example in the screenshot
below.bet

To the attention of the

To be able to use the CombiGen you will have to
have MS Excel installed on your PC. As the spreadsheet uses
macros to perform its functions Excel's settings will have to
be adjusted so that macros are accepted and run as intended. To
do this follow the following procedure: open any Excel file (or
a blank one), go to "Tools" (from
Excel's standard menu options), then
"Options", then click the
"Security" tab, click the
"Macro Security" button, and select
"Low" (if you leave the setting to
High macros will not run and the spreadsheet will not work, if
you choose the Medium option Excel will ask you every time you
open the file if it should accept running the macros or not,
which is a bit annoying, but is still an option, although of
little practical value). bet

If Excel shows any cell errors, indicated by a
small green triangle in the corner of a cell, do not be
alarmed, as this does not mean there are errors with the
spreadsheet. As some of the cells are protected (to deter
accidental user interferance), and some of them are not (to
allow spreadsheet functionality), this causes Excel to show
cell error indicators. Simply follow this procedure:
"Tools" >
"Options" > "Error
Checking" tab > untick the "Unlocked
cells containing formulas" option. This will sort
out Excel's worries over the unlocked cells. It only takes 4
mouse clicks to reactivate this option should you need it for
your other Excel work so hopefully this will not be an issue at
all.bet
